I went to a Zumba class yesterday and it was AMAZING.
So amazing, I decided to write a quick blog about it.
Quick note – this isn’t a paid partnership or ad for Zumba! I just really liked it!
Zumba prides itself on “being perfect for everybody and every body.” It’s a combination of world rhythms with easy-to-follow choreography that empowers participants to becoming their best selves – mind, body and soul.
As someone with a dance background, I used to be highly perfectionistic about my performance in any dance class or show rehearsal. I cared too much about what I looked like and often worried people were noticing my body’s ‘flaws’. I got frustrated at getting the steps wrong or making mistakes. I compared myself in the mirror to what I looked like the session before.
Not only does recovery from an eating disorder change how you fuel and nourish your body, it changes how you feel within your body. As I looked around the room yesterday, I saw bodies of all shapes and sizes, all ages, and all colours. It actually brought a tear to my eye (think of that what you will!) because I was so grateful for my journey and to be experiencing such a fun dance class with others.
I no longer compare myself to others or judge other’s capabilities. Now I look for movement that makes me smile, that builds community and strength. And I give bonus points for any movement featuring an excellent backing track!
My soul was happy to see so many people dancing their socks off, proud of how their bodies moved. Thanks Zumba!
If you, or anyone you know, struggles with self judgement or finding joy with movement, drop me a message. I’d love to support you find a healthier relationship with your body :)
